Giving

Giving

I get so wrapped up in my circumstances that I forget that life should be about service.  So today I’m encouraging myself to become a cheerful giver. I will take some time to give back to others. Here are a few small things we can do to be the change we all want to see in the world.

1.      Take food to a neighbor
2.      Pay for the order of the person behind you in line
3.      Smile and say hello so someone
4.      Write a letter to a service person
5.      Call your parents and say thanks

10 Green Detox Smoothies

10 Green Detox Smoothies

I  found a few easy recipes that can be made in a blender at home. Below is a video that demonstrates the best way to make a detox smoothie. Use this method for any of the smoothie recipes below...

This kale apple smoothie is from Whole Living magazine. It has no fat and 4 grams of fiber
Ingredients
1 cup kale or collard greens firmly packed, stems removed, coarsely chopped (4 ounces)
1 Granny Smith apple, coarsely chopped
1 ripe banana
1/2 cup loosely packed fresh flat-leaf parsley leaves

2 This one is from Whole Living as well. Cucumber, Honeydew, and Mint sounds a little strange but the ingredients could work well together
Ingredients
1/2 English cucumber, peeled and chopped
1/2 honeydew melon, peeled and chopped (2 cups)
1 cup pear juice
2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
1/4 cup fresh mint leaves

3 I found this one on a food blog. It has lots of fruit to kill the taste of spinach and celery
Ingredients
3 cups frozen diced pineapple
3 cups fresh baby spinach
1 cup frozen diced banana
1 celery rib (optional)
1 Tbsp. grated fresh ginger (start with less and add more if desired)
1 Tbsp. chia seeds
juice from half a lime

4 I found this recipe on the Shape website. Apparently some celebrities swear by this one.
Ingredients
-1 1/2 cups water
-1 head organic romaine lettuce, chopped
-3-4 stalks organic celery

-1/2 head of a large bunch, or 3/4 of a small bunch of spinach
-1 organic apple, cored and chopped
-1 organic pear, cored and chopped
-1 organic banana

-Juice of 1/2 fresh organic lemon

Optional

-1/3 bunch organic cilantro (stems okay)

-1/3 bunch organic parsley (stems okay)

5 These next two are from a blog. I haven’t tried them because the ingredients sound strange and I’m not a fan of artificial sweeteners
Ingredients
Savory Thai Smoothie
3-4 servings
2 cups spinach
½ bunch cilantro
½ garlic clove
½ red or orange bell pepper
2 Tbsp. lime juice
3 tomatoes
1 packet stevia
1 avocado
1 cup water

6 Ingredients
Classic Green Juice
1 large English Cucumber
3 to 4 stalks of celery
1 broccoli stalk
4-5 large kale leaves (as you grow accustomed to taste, increase amount of kale)
1” piece of gingerroot
1 lemon
1/4 – 1/2 tsp stevia to sweeten

7 Incredible Smoothies website calls this one the ultimate detox smoothie

Number Six on My Bucket List

Here’s the thing, I have never intentionally ran anywhere in my life. I've sprinted after my kids when they were toddlers. I ran a few times to take a bus when I was younger but running has never been my thing. Nevertheless number six on my bucket list (right between make out with Bradley Cooper and eat a chocolate cake made by the cake boss) is to run in the Bay to Breakers race. Bay to Breakers is an annual footrace which takes place in San Francisco, California.

Bay to Breakers is not your typical race. It’s probably one of the only races in the world where serious runners can be seen running right next to men dressed as wonder woman. I've never taken my kids to see the racers because there has been the occasional nude runner and I’m not ready to explain to my four year old why some balls are wrinkled.

Try Something New

Okay so i'ts time for me to become a hypocrite. I'm about to encourage you to try something I've never actually tried. Luna Dance Institute is offering a free dance class. The class is at Luna Dance Institute, 605 Addison in Berkeley.  www.lunadanceinstitute.org. Noon-3 pm. According to the SF Guardian this dance school celebrates its return to Berkeley with first modern dance instruction for older kids, then a family dance classes that everyone can shake a hip to.

I figured dancing is an activity that’s fun for the whole family or for individuals. It’s a good way to meet new people and it’s the best price, free. If you don’t live in the Bay Area then hears a link to the center for dance in the west which should help you find a class in your area. http://www.odcdance.org/event_view.php?param=204

Exercise is the best way to get the blood circulating and renew the mind so I’m going to take a chance and drag myself away from watching the Bachelor (although Sean is yummy) and set off to find something new. I hope you will as well!

Making it Better

I read somewhere that if you do what you love than you’ll never work a day in your life. In theory I know this is true but love has never paid a bill. So like most normal people (excluding princesses and wealthy heiress) work can be just another stressor in life. I know it was always that way for me until the economy failed and I found myself out of work and unable to find a job. Like millions of American’s my unemployment ran out and there I was standing at a cross road. Do I give up on life, sit in a corner and wait for the student loan sharks to take away my first born or do I take this crappy misfortune as an opportunity. Today I chose to see it as an opportunity to do what I've always wanted to do, write.

Enjoying, Life, Mind Body and Spirit- will be about all the things that make me happy and ways to make life better. The blog will provide its readers with useful tips. These are tips I've used to keep myself from going completely bonkers, shedding all my clothes and running down the street in the buff singing Christmas carols (yes I've considered it!). So as an alternative I will write about ways to keep the mind healthy, exercises for the lazy person (such as myself), ways to have a healthy spiritual life and things to do on a budget. I hope this blog will serve its purpose, which is to keep you and me far away from crazy.
